Weekly round-up - 16 October 2024

Welcome to this week’s round-up of interesting snippets from around the world of wholesome food.

Sustainable Food Cities

The Soil Association and others have this week announced the launch of a Sustainable Food Cities Network. This aims to:

…give as many people as possible the knowledge and skills to access affordable healthy and sustainable food in a way that tackles food poverty and diet-related ill-health; promotes local economic prosperity for farmers and food businesses; and minimises the negative environmental impacts of food in terms of climate change, biodiversity loss and waste.

This sounds like exactly what our members are trying to do and it seems like a useful initiative in a similar way to Transition Towns.

Urban agriculture

Continuing the urban theme, WFA members involved in either growing or distributing food in urban areas may find the City Harvest campaign, backed by Sustain, helpful. Describing itself as an “online resource which demonstrates the wide range of benefits associated with urban agriculture, it highlights various urban projects including, I’m delighted to say, that of WFA members Organiclea.

Home generators

With winter coming, people living wholly or partly off-grid will want to make sure their generators are in good working order. For those wanting a fall-back plan from the national grid, this article might provide a good starting point. Although it’s Canadian, the principles are the same.

Grains and permanent agriculture

There’s an interesting discussion at The Sustainable Smallholding about growing methods, yields etc for different kinds of grain. There are some thought-provoking questions. Click here to read it.

And finally…

I already shared this on our Facebook page, but it really tickled me, so here it is again:

Have a great week, everyone.
